Tapping on equipment is a nono right? due to how players always tap the aura/equipment at the same time as the creature attached?

Yup. THis is a pretty good candidate for charge counters. ~ ETBS wih a charge counter on it. ­{1}, remove a charge counter from ~: Equipped creature gets +2/+2.

Alternatively, you can get a one-shot effect like that having the cost just be unattaching like with Blinding Powder or Leonin Bola
