Based on where it targets, I read this as the fight occurs after the opponent's creature dies.

Time to Feed actually would be a really cool card to functionally reprint in this set considering Parish Guardian.

Is there really a point to have the fight spell in this set to be exactly this?

No. The idea was for it to just be a Convoke fight spell. That is off the table. I am open to iterations.
