Hm, Blood Pet in the right colour, but with a strangely more restrictive wording.

yeah playing around with keywords. Consume would go on small, cheap permanents to give them more relevance/usefulness in mid-late game. Was originally going to be a mechanic in the Aerikal set.

I may just scrap it and use the Blood Pet ability.

You could also add a restriction like allowing this only at sorcery speed, or similar, if you wanted to emphasise the "trade up" nature rather than the "aha, surprise!" nature, although I'm not sure which would be better.

The nature of the mechanic precludes any 'aha, surprise' element as the permanent with consume has to already be on the battlefield to use the ability. It does certainly add complexity as you need to be aware of its potential as a mana source. That said, canny players will find ways to use an opponent's consume permanents to their favour. " Hmm he has an Island untapped and that permanent with Consume {1}. I can either not do anything in case he has ---Insert any counterspell costing 2 here--- or I can try and draw it out, putting him down a creature/artifact/whatever"

decdided that I didn't need the keyword (and that I can free it up for some other mechanic) so this is now templay=ted a-la Blood Pet.
