Random generator gave me Poison the Well and Mountain. Mountain color shifts Poison the Well red. That's tricky. Somehow I need to make this card red, and definitely not black.

I thought about changing this card to say "Deal 2 damage to target creature" instead of "target player"... but really, that could be a black spell, too. It seems like black has the same access to removal that red has... it just costs black more to do it. Deal damage directly, +X/-X, Scar, sacrificing permanents... black can do all this, and might be gaining some life while doing it.

So I opted for Bullwhip, which Black can't do nowadays. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't put this back into black's color pie for some time. Grandfathered abilities are sometimes hard to avoid reprinting. Ask Prodigal Sorcerer.

"Deal 2 damage to target creature" isn't black, really. It's only black if it's toughness-reduction, destruction/forced sacrifice, or "damage plus life gain". The Pestilence ability is red these days - Plague Spitter and Last Laugh are outside the modern colour pie. So I think you could do that.

I was thinking about Dry Spell. It seems that black is more likely to Shrivel you instead. The problem is, that that card already exists... Devastate. I also thought about going the Tremor route, since that has the distinction of never being black. But again... Devastate was too close. I also could have dealt 3 damage to a flying creature, but... well... you could make the flavor work for that, but if I saw that card, I couldn't help but think that the designer was forcing it.

As for straight up direct damage to creatures, Dead Reckoning, Kiku, Night's Flower, Kiku's Shadow and Kor Dirge all get there. Though, one could argue that the black needs to either drain damage, or have an external source for it's damage, since those four spells all base their damage dealing, indirectly, on some other creature's power. I guess they haven't made a black Bee Sting yet. I wonder if they will and/or how long it will take before Banshee and Infernal Harvest make sense as black cards again...

Dry Spell is another instance of the Pestilence ability. The Kiku ability is interesting, because white also gets it - Repentance / Wave of Reckoning - and obviously red doesn't. Dead Reckoning and Kor Dirge are pretty weird, I'll admit, and they do weaken my point a little. I guess we could also mention Murderous Redcap here; and there's the new Corpse Lunge as well. It's very interesting that "damage equal to one creature's power to another creature" is a black ability, as I'd have thought of it as more green (Durkwood Tracker, Master of the Wild Hunt, Fight, etc).

On the other hand, the "destroy target land plus some damage to a creature" has just been printed as well: Into the Maw of Hell.

Ha. Okay, my claim about red not getting the Kiku's Shadow ability was obviously short-sighted: Dark Ascension has come along and brought Wrack with Madness in red.

Since Hook Yank, there's a blue card with a Siren ability, and this card was plenty powerful, I dropped it from Bullwhip to a general "You got to throw something at me". I'd be frustrated at all the forced attacks, but really? I'm upset about how much attacking is going on in my draft environment?
