damage to a player, if Thunderblade Charge is in your
graveyard, you may pay {2}{R}{R}{R}. If you do, you may cast
it without paying its mana cost.

Thunderblade Charge deals 3 damage to target creature or player.
Whenever one or more creatures you control deal combat damage to a player, if Thunderblade Charge is in your graveyard, you may pay . If you do, you may cast it without paying its mana cost.
Chose this over Hammer of Bogardan because it is less punishing on your mana base. Hammer you have to pay the in your upkeep and then pay its casting cost to use it that's 8 mana to reuse it after first being cast. This at least is all optional, true you can only recast it if your creature gets through to hit a player in combat which is a harder trigger than start of upkeep by far but, when it does it only costs you 5 to recast and, as the ruling says, each damage step (first strike and regular) will cause this to trigger, meaning that, if you just happen to have 10 mana laying around, you can use it twice.
Was a big fan of the hammer back in the day and can remember how often you would hear "Stop, Hammer Time!" at the play tables (damn you MC Hammer). Whilst not always useful, this is a good backup trick.
