Emerald Charm style planeswalker, for Challenge # 042
So; no + ability. This functions more as a delayed use charm, but still gets some value I think.
I don't know... that's roughly like saying that Planeswalkers, in general, are too complex to be common... which is probably true, to be honest.
I did intentionally choose simple abilities. Are you complaining that the abilities themselves are too complex, the confusion that this causes on the board state is too complex, or having to make decisions about which ability to use is too complex?
I wouldn't expect to have more than 5 of these printed in a large set. Do you think there's no room for complexity on common cards, even if those cards are surrounded by normal commons? If I were to fan a pack, and this popped up, do you think the amount of words on it would upset a new player?
★★★ Joe Schmoe, the Underwhelming Planeswalker!!! ★★★
@jmg: Well, if we're talking about putting Planeswalkers in the C/U rarities, then evidently in this set, Planeswalkers have become a very common occurence, and it's logical that in this universe/plane some will be less powerful and therefore less notable than the others. I think that take on it is much more palatable than having a TON of named commons and uncommons reading as "Joe Schmoe, the Underwhelming Planeswalker" and they are all legend-ruling each other in limited. I agree that the flavor of it is still awkward, and is probably one of the major reasons that we will never see C/U planeswalkers ever printed.
Made Chandra's Simulacrum, Gideon's Simulacrum, and, to spice things up, added Mairsil, the Devious.
For Challenge # 042. For the last submission, I wanted to try out a different idea. Instead, this card assumes that we're on a Plane that is dominated by one meddling Planeswalker, that takes on various guises and is constantly meddling with the populace. So much so, that meeting him isn't rare at all... it's an uncommon event. I chose Mairsil (who's only a wizard in The Gathering Dark story line... he's getting an upgrade, and a 'but just before I died' sequence), because in The Dark's story line, he used all five colors of Magic, and liked to jump back and forth, playing different parts and roles. They didn't call him Mairsil, the Prentender for nothing. I also chose to do the black one, since that one was the most likely to reference the existance of other Mairsils in the set... here, he's Lobotomyizing his own handiwork.
For Challenge # 042. See Chandra's Simulacrum for an explanation. I put 3 abilities on Chandra, because I felt a need to keep things complex in their simplicity. Players play planeswalkers for many reasons, but one is the options that they give them. Gideon's first ability is complicated enough, however, so I passed on adding a second option. Again, we're drawing cards as a means of representing 'finding something'.
This is just far too complex to be a common. Seriously.
For Challenge # 042. The idea here is that there's a plane with some sort of mystery involved in it. Let's say an ancient artifact that's been prophesied to be on it. The plane, however is vast. Jace couldn't trust agents with this delicate search, so he did the most logical thing he could think of to find it as fast as possible; make multiple copies of himself to fan out and search the plane for clues. Other Planeswalkers, however, quickly noticed what Jace did, and repeated his trick, leaving a slew of Planeswalker Mirror-Images in their wake.
Since I wanted to show this at its extreme, I used Chandra, who probably wouldn't have chosen to do any of this, if the artifact in question wasn't so damned powerful. Funny thing, though... Chandra still just runs around and burns things. Her 'Ultimate', though, is designed to do what many of the rest of Planeswalker's Simulacrums are doing: Find more information.
I like the idea going on here... and I see you did the first thing that I thought of - remove the Planeswalker sub-type so it was no longer 'Legendary' and you could play as many of these guys as you want. The flavor still feels a bit off to me, though, since, well, this guy is still a Planeswalker. So that means that he/she has a name, background and personality, even if we're treating him/her generically.
This reminds me a bit of the Decipher Star Wars CCG. There were a lot of cards that referenced Luke, Darth Vader, The Millenium Falcon, etc.. This was a bit unfortunate, since Darth Vader alone fetched $100 on the singles market. So Decipher decided to print up a bunch of common versions of the main characters, without the beefed up stats, so Average Joe Star Wars players had a chance to play 10% of the cards in their collection again. Unfortunately, they felt terrible to play with, and kind of cheapened the game.
I don't think this is that, since this isn't "Jace, the n00b". It's still a generic planeswalker, though... I think if I saw this card, without seeing the set it came from, I'd be a bit upset... kind of like dude's initial evaluation. I think I could be won over by an awesome set construction overcoming that heap, but I wonder if the payoff would be worth the exertion. Maybe?
