Yeah, I wasn't sure what to do with the cost. The only thing I knew was that I should keep some distance between this and Last Ditch Effort, since this card is much, much better. But I think we can drop this to 3 and still be fair.

Hmm. Last-Ditch Effort meets Firestorm. On the one hand, cards in hand are scarcer than creatures on the table because tokens; on the other hand, if they're not tokens you'll need to have paid mana for them. You get death triggers, but... Overall, I think this could be a lot cheaper.

Random generator gave me Goblin Grenade and Volcanic Wind, and while I suppose this could have been forced into an artifact for Alpha's skeleton, but it really wanted to be something similar to this card.

Technically, this should probably be a rare. It's in uncommon, though, because it could be there, in theory, and it's easier to bump rares out of uncommon. Really, I should put a lot more commons and rares in uncommon so I can find them and bump them up and down later...

Heh. I'd love that. I remember when the big Mirrodin standardisation happened combing through all the old cards that use charge counters (rather than warp counters, time counters, depletion counters or what-have-you) for things that'd work with Power Conduit and Energy Chamber. I hit the jackpot with Magistrate's Scepter. That deck got a bit obnoxious though.

I think it'd rather fall afoul of their rules on "only one type of counter can go on creatures at common". Though I think the idea some Multiverser had of making the Tips & Tricks card be designed to tear up into 12 tokens was grand.

Randomly generated Sinister Possession and Shiv's Embrace. Oh, cool. I don't need to make this a strict mashup... I can just make an embrace flavored around a wraith or spirit that costs five mana...

Which turned out to not really work, oddly. A couple hundred choices, but nothing that really jumped out. I did try Lone Revenant, which is kind of neat as an embrace, but all those extra words on the Revenant do detract... and the card didn't really feel like the successor of Sinister Possession and Shiv's Embrace. Maybe part of the same cycle...

So I kind of fudged one up. I guess I should make this 5/3 swampwalker some time, to justify this choice. I appear to have created a Zephid.

(Also, originally had shred counters ala Cephalid Vandal. But the flavor switched to plummeting the deep, and pressure counters ala Hellion Crucible and Magma Mine made more sense. When are we gonna get our 'counter names matter' block? It's been 20 years of weird counter names, and they've never really mattered beyond the cards they were printed on. I'm pretty sure we could do something Lorwyn-esque with 7 counter 'tribes'.)

Random Generator gave me Homarid and Shred Memory. I knew what I wanted to do when I saw them together, but it took a while to parse the language into something acceptable. It's probably not worth this goofiness for one card, but this could make a neat cycle. I'm putting this in the workbench. It's a good leaping point for Beta.

Also, I have no idea how to cost creatures nowadays. I feel like this is supposed to cost {3}{u}{u}. But is that kosher? Do we cost blue rare 5/5s with minor bonus abilities at 5 now?

  • 2013-10-18 01:00:14: jmgariepy commented on Spellbreaker Gargantuan

Random Generator gave me Island and Spearbreaker Behemoth. This seemed like a great time to fill in my Blue Rare Land slot, but I just couldn't get there. "Target artifact with a converted mana cost of 5 or greater" just didn't sound like a sexy land. I tried changing unbreakable to uncounterable, but decided that would make a better color-shifted creature. So I did that, and sent it to the workbench.
