One of the main challenges for this mechanic is making sure there are good reasons not to just put the counter on the creature itself.
Well it could prevent damage to planeswalkers. However this way of doing it may be unnecessarily complicated, I'll look into it.

A riff on Conclave Equenaut. Fair enough. Bit confusing to have "defender" in the name but the creature not have defender.
Strictly worse than Alabaster Wall and Benevolent Ancestor.
