On the plane of Antalya, the sprawling empire of Flavia rules much of the land with an iron fist. The kingdom has seen many decades of rapid expansion into the surrounding wilderness, plundering resources and brutally repressing any that would not bow to the will of the royal family. Dissenters that refuse to pay tithing to the king are forced into the mines as slaves, thus serving his will one way or another. One such slave, a young woman named Khatha, would go on to use this brutality against them. When the first opportunity rose, she managed to slay her captors and free enough of her peers to stage a small insurrection. With a diversion in place, they snuck into the royal palace and assassinated King Constane before making their escape deep into the wilderness. There, a new nation founded on the principles of liberty and equality was created in the name of the woman who had inspired the movement and done the impossible - Khatha. As more dissenters and refugees flock there from all corners of the empire, the once small thorn in the side of the omnipotent dynasty grows more and more inconvenient.

In the wake of these events, the newly-crowned King Erdwin seeks revenge against the slaves that murdered his father and brought turmoil to his "peaceful" nation. However, he has more than just martial supremacy at his disposal. His dynasty was built upon an ancient secret, a never-ending source of raw mana hidden within the palace behind wards both physical and mystical: The Gilded Grove. With this power, the spirit of every dead Flavian royal is summoned and bound to an invincible entity of protection magic known as the Order of the White Star. So long as it exists, the Flavian Imperial Army can never be defeated and the dynasty will live forever.

What's more, the Flavian Empire's recently commissioned Elementalist Academy has unwittingly served this end by improving the magical defenses of the capital. Knowing not the nature of the limitless mana they are given for their research, they pursue the systematic cataloging of magic with an ironic sense of ethical consistency and burning curiosity.

The unceasing expansion of the Flavian Empire has done more than agitate rebellion within itself. Throughout the untamed wilds that make up the borders of imperial power, creatures meek and terrible have begun to stir. Living embodiments of rage and vengeance rise from the land itself, possessed to take action against those that continue to disrupt the order of nature. As the very realm and all of its inhabitants begin to fight back against the power of this ever-encroaching human threat, an unlikely alliance forms: for as long as the Khathans share goals with the denizens of the wilds, there will be peace between them. This alliance was facilitated by none other than the planeswalkers Samut and Nissa Revane, who found themselves embroiled in the political conflict immediately after arriving on the plane. But they are not the only visitors from elsewhere in the multiverse...

After learning of the fabled Gilded Grove from informants on another plane, Davriel Cane traveled to Antalya to claim its power for his own and take control of the world soul inside him once and for all. After learning of the growing conflict surrounding the Grove from a cadre of specters, he agrees to assist them in their plan to phase it off the plane where it can no longer be used to disrupt the cycle of life and death and in return they will help him with his own problem.

And there is one other member of this coalition against the empire - the spite witch Alzua and her powerful coven. After her entire village was burned to the ground by Flavian troops for refusing to allow statues of King Constane in their church, Alzua was rescued by a wandering priest and brought to a neighboring village's parish. The lone survivor of the terrible night, she grew bitter and resentful of the cruelty of the regime and of her fellow citizens that continued to turn a blind eye. She vowed to one day get her revenge against them all. After a long string of mysterious disappearances, she came to lead the parish. One by one, the local villagers started taking ill and dying until none were left but Alzua and her most faithful. None that traveled through the town ever seemed to return, and it soon faded into obscurity. Now, in this time of war, she and her coven are fighting back against the empire and will not rest until it has fallen. This has led to a tenuous alliance with the others warring with King Erdwin. While her disposition makes the coalition uneasy, they will take any help they can get. But her motive remains unclear - none but Alzua herself know that, when the time is right, she intends to take the Grove's power for herself and channel it into an immolation spell that wipe out the entire plane, once and for all.
