On Yggran, the Life Tree (reply):

I imagine Yggran is far from being a final product. The basic gist is to have something that will recycle the cards that are exiled by the soultill mechanic. Now while grabing cards from exile should be done very rarely, I still need some kind of effect to do so. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

On Yggran, the Life Tree:

That could be a possibility, it depends on how the rest of the set pans out. I'm looking to have a mid-range focus on exiling cards which is why he's able to grab anything. If there are very few cards outside of soultill, I'll consider going the Runic Repetition route.

Another thought that comes to mind is to change it into a legendary land in one of the other sets as a single-use one card grab. Especially if it only grabs soultill cards since I don't want the mythics to directly reference the keywords.

On Lady Sabine:

Heh. Well, I like the way the abilities tell a story. It's unfortunate that you'd pretty much only ever want to activate +3, then -2 once or twice, then -6; not much flexibility in the order there. But the flavour is great as well, so this is a pretty good design.

On Yggran, the Life Tree:

You could take the Runic Repetition approach and explicitly say "exiled card with soultill you own"?

On Lady Sabine:

Its a top-down design of a Gorgon planeswalker now. May trade colors with Quoll Gollag

On Yggran, the Life Tree:

I think they have a bizarre tendency to make mythics that will only be played in limited... if at all. Mythic really doesn't mean playable.

On Yggran, the Life Tree:

Ha! To be honest, rare has always meant junk rare. I think the ratio of playable to not playable cards in the rare slot has remained the same in the past 10 years. The mythic slot, however, is almost always playable, and rarely specialized. It's the 'marquee' slot, meant to show off the set, and have artwork on the box. Shuffles McGee might be exciting to the right person, but he probably should stay away from "selling the set".

On Yggran, the Life Tree:

Mythics aren't meant to be "niche" cards, most of the time, at least. Abyssal Persecutor is probably fine for being so very splashy and memorable. Eye of Ugin I'd call a bad mythic (it was the set before Eldrazi existed).

Your point about the "really freaking removed from the game forever" zone is pretty much precisely why Link and I (and MaRo) don't think this kind of card should exist.

On Yggran, the Life Tree:

So rare now means junk rare, and mythic rare means rare?

Anyhow. If this card exists, then the "Really freakin removed from the game forever" zone needs to make a comeback.

Mostly though, this is going to be a really really annoying wall of block.

On Yggran, the Life Tree:

Heh. My first thought was "This thing makes you shuffle too often, for not a good enough reward". That's probably true for situations that breaking exile don't apply. Personally, I like shuffling, and will gladly shuffle every turn... but I'm a specific arch-type... that's the sort of thing that the rare slot is meant for. Mythic Rare should be things that make 95% of the audience smile when they draw it and can play it.
