Hee... the universal Clone. Feels like it should cost slightly more than Rite of Replication in order to get the Copy Enchantment/Sculpting Steel/Vesuva ability. Also, by comparison with those others, this should probably be rare.
I went back to creatures only. I wasn't trying to make a crazy awesome card here, just a good functional one.
Upgraded back to a rare (and made more versatile) due to space issues.
Could the cost go up by
then? It feels somewhat bad to obsolete Rite of Replication's unkicked mode in two ways at once (more targets, and instant rather than sorcery).
I think it's fine, as rite unkicked is kind of already obsoleted by Clone. The kicker is what really makes that card special. I may make it cost 5 later, but it'll most likely be if its too powerful as a combat trick.
On an aside, it seems Rite can kill legends. Should I let this one do so too?
The only real benefit Clone has over an unkicked Rite of Replication is colour density (as in, you only need 1 Blue source, not 2). I agree this probably wants an additional mana (generally Instants cost
more than equivalent sorceries anyway).
Clone is easier to re-use. Still, being an instant, on second thought, this should start at 5 mana.
Honestly, d think this would be better at "target permanent", period. I know you were trying to avoid using this as removal, but honestly, that's one of the most interesting possibilities with Clones anyway, and it gives blue a way to deal with some stuff it might otherwise have a problem with.
Maaaaybe "nonplaneswalker permanent", but that would sound weird and break the unwritten rule of not writing the word "planeswalker" in text boxes.
Elegance wins, I suppose. Plus future compatibility with Contraptions!
This seems like an effect that should not be playable as an instant. Does it lose much as a sorcery? If you really want to keep it at instant, I think the CMC needs to go up to 6.
