Rather than saying "~ is red", you can just use a colour indicator. See the reprinted version of Pact of Negation versus the original cycle like Pact of the Titan.

If WotC were to print a new "pay or lose" card, I think they would make it so that it triggers at the beginning of the draw step, not upkeep, even if it's a bit unorthodox. Too many complaints about people forgetting the trigger during the upkeep, drawing a card, now oops you just lost the game.
