I'm pondering "nonland".

Nonland isn't quite "Each player sacrifices a creature for each creature they control" but it comes pretty close :)

Also, apart from the name; why is this red?

Because cards like Misguided Rage and Crack the Earth are red. I feel the ability to avoid Damnation is somewhat in line with red's philosophy.
