Poo. You're right. Angel of Mercy was too obvious a choice for a Magic card, I suppose. This time, I'll go for a name that indicates the patron saint that protects you from painful memories.
You know, I get what you're saying, and I think the vast majority of the Magic playing audience would agree with you, but I think I'm going to stick to my guns with this one. This seems to me to be a natural extension of White's philosophy. Red says things like, "Let me do what I want, or I'll hit you!", ala Browbeat. I don't see why White can't say "Follow the letter of the law, or I will strike you down!" Or, in the form of another argument, if we agree that white can deal direct damage when attacking and blocking, why can't we agree that white can deal damage in other ways that match its outlook on life?
That being the case, I'm going to pull back the weirdness by having the card only target players. After all, proper crime, proper punishment. Your creatures didn't break the rules; You did.
Wow! So there was - Opaline Sliver. I never realised that was Reparations. I thought it was a detoothed Crystalline Sliver. I got the references in the other Time Spiral gold slivers, but completely missed that one :)
There's a Reparations sliver from Timespiral as well, but the flavor was completely lost on that one. Without the snippity imperialist connection, the card loses its teeth.
This still feels rather out-of-pie. How about "1 damage to target player with no cards in hand or to target attacking or blocking creature whose controller has no cards in hand"? It's the "attacking or blocking" restriction that I think really needs to be there.
I think it's very sensible to do some mashups like this. If you look at the mashups on the Goblin Artisans blog, some of them take barely anything from one of the cards being mashed. This took the "top of library" idea from Painful Memories, which I think is enough.
Templating sadly needs to be a bit more fiddly. "...you may return up to five target creatures you own and/or creature cards in your graveyard to the top of your library" might work. See Rise // Fall for a similar template.
Oh, and the name Angel of Mercy is taken.
It was alluded to with Rayne, Academy Chancellor. But even that was a long time ago.
