Anyone know how this can be worked so it doesn't just die?
That's... quite tricky, actually, if you want it to work with Bargain as written. A cast trigger won't work.
You could do a horrible hack like "~ ETBs with 4 +1/+1 counters on it. When ~ ETBs, at end of turn remove 4 +1/+1 counters from it."
But at that point you might as well say "~ ETBs with a negotiation counter on it. As long as ~ has a negotiation counter on it, it's not put into a graveyard for having 0 or less toughness. At EOT, remove a negotiation counter from ~."
The only elegant solution I can find is to make it a 1/1 rare for

.
What if Bargain was "as this creature ETBs..." instead of "when this creature ETBs..."?
Make it a 1/1 but add some other drawback? Make it a 1/1 but add half that many counters rounded up?
BTW, I like the flavour, but how is bargain supposed to work -- do all the cards have a reason to chose "pay" rather than "gain"?
Trying to prevent instadeath
Most of them. Sometimes you want the gain, other times you might want to trigger a different bargain card. Notice many of them work any time you pay life.
Probably a rare now
3b -> 2bb
Kinda like a blade-tribe berserkers that can grow with downside. But if you REALLY need the 4 life, a 2/2 spark elemental.
