Farrel's Zealot
Hmm. This isn't a very white ability any more. I think we'll do a sab-token maker. White needs one; and it has a partially similar effect of "Block me or face more damage" (though not targetted damage).
It also feels kinda zealotish - it inspires new recruits.
So this has changed completely. TODO: Not sure what black card this is the mirror of now.
Dwarven Lieutenant
I think the only thing I need to do here is add 'or soldier' to make this co-operate nicely with the icatians.
no better idea came to me, so implement it
Armor Thrull
Well; I'm not going to make a custom +1/+2 token. And +2/+2 is fine too; two +1 counters.
But I wanted to make a bit of a crossover theme, and so we'll do those two counters as +1 and proliferate.
That ties into both the spore mechanic, and the high-tide mechanic; as well as making you want to throw down lots of thrulls.
The only risk here is that maybe it's too good a combo and might overshadow everything else. But I think it's worth trying.
TODO: Add proliferate to other cards. I'm thinking maybe all high-tide cards directly do it as their way of counting up?
Icatian Scout
Well, this makes combat horrible; so red flag for nwo. To make this more common - force you to decide as combat starts?
Yeah, that's wordier, but simpler to actually play. Also if it has to actually risk itself, it'll lead to fewer groundstally days (which this set has way too many of).
And... maybe this is how we play up the pseudo conflict within white. Leitbur grants itself things; Icatia grants those same things to others? (c.f. Order of Leitbur )
Except; uh; there's one single Leitbur card right now. I'd have to invent a lot. Meh.
I wanted an image of a horrific tentacle tree animating zombies. I search for "Zombie plant". I ended up here :)
You sure you want to go with that art? Reeks of 'un' to me.
Edit: otherwise, cool card imo
Fog every third turn. Nothing really wrong with this; but it's not really sensible at common.
And I'd like to co-operate with the thrulls a bit.
So we'll go with full-on reanimate instead of preventing the combat damage. Not quite as useful if you can't block; but if green lacks a swarm then green is doing it wrong.
copy&paste errors continue. Necrite -> ~
As discussed Necrite; make a mirror creature in green.
Given the completely crap seelciton of artifacts in set, I dson't think this would see much use.
This basically exists because I accidentally made the black one do this - then realised black doesn't get to do artifact destruciotn in modern; and then realised it didn't do it back in the day and I'd just completely failed to correctly copy&paste the rules text.
seriously; why did I change this? Change it back.
Um; ok; let's not make this make opponents spells
more expensive. That's significantly stronger that force-spike; it's a hard-counter for non-blue decks. "Turn 3, you can no longer cast spells". Let's make it
instead.
Deep Spawn
Simplificaiton - regenrate shroud becomes hexproof.
I wanted to tie this in to the brassclaw ability. Something like giving high-tide to opponents. I think we'll use "Has this attacked". A bit of a bombo though; you'd usually rather attack with a 6/6 trampler than a Brassclaw Orcs.
What about reversing damage to the sources controller? (When they hit your creature with a shock)
If enchanted Creature deals X damage to a player, you may have it instead deal X+2 damage to target creature.
Buhh. Must simplify. And it's not massively in white's wheelhouse anymore.
Maybe make it punish on taking damage instead? That's whiter.
Here we go; makes a creature punch back as hard as it is hit.
Elvish Hunter
Double-tap a creature. Hmm. There's nothing particularly wrong with that in modern. But I do want to make this more synergistic with the thrulls.
The thrulls are mostly about sacrificing to put counters on things. So... proliferate maybe? Or bring stuff back?
Let's try the second.
Balm of Restoration
So; you thought healing salve was crap? How about we give you one that you have to set up in advance, and is only 2/3 as good?
Yeeeeesh. Junk rare, or what? (Technically, what, since it was U1 because collation of this set was wonky. But details)
I would also complain that this adds yet more to the groundstall in the set - except even back in the day this was too too crappy and no one ran it. The Amulet of Kroog existed then, for crying out loud and hardly anyone ran that. (I do recall an irritating 'lets have four samite healers in play, and four amulets of kroog and.. damage isn't a thing any more. And my deck has 61 cards in it' deck.)
So, I guess this is a free slot for whatever? A Weakstone variant would play nicely into reds cowardice theme. though it would also do fairly nasty things to any red aggro deck, so a bit of a bombo there.
Ah, but one that you can trigger would probably work quite well. Let's try that. It also kinda is damage prevention; so there's that similarity to the original slot.
TODO: Add some power-manipulation stuff to other cards; and more cowards; to support the ability.
TODO: This could be where we get proliferate into blue, for the
synergy?
TODO: This could usefully be a slot for whatever the
or
synergy ends up being.
Maro podcast talked about factions; and stressed over and over the need for some synergy between them to make two-colour playable.
Which is a fair point.
To add that to this set... I think we change some of the thallid high-tide mechanic to play interestingly with the orc cowardice mechanic. Give an opponent high tide?
And to play another way - if we have propogate or similar counter manipulation; that would play well into itsown high tide, and also let it co-operate with green's thallid-swarm mechanic. So we'll give that to the merfolk.
White+Black already kinda co-operate, with their mirrored similar mechanics. But maybe play it up a bit? And I still need to figure out the non-leitbur half-side in white.
Dwarf + Cityfolk just play together well; that should be ok.
Elf and Thrull? How does that go together? Which demographic can it please?
Same for green black?
Orcish Veteran
So a triggerred first-striker with a variant on the cowards ability.
Colour hate can get lost. That cowards ability is now really quite terrible looking. So we'll downcost this to a bear.
Zurgo Bellstriker suggests this is now kinda valid - coward 2/2 for 2 with upside (even if it makes Ironclaw Orcs look sad).
So let's try it.
Basal Thrull
Rituals are more red's bag than black's nowadays; but sac-for can be black too. So I don't really see anything wrong with this as it is. Might work better as
instead of
; but it loses a bit of the symmetry. I don't feel any pressing need to change it, really.
Having "
, Sac" is a super common template even today. In fact, there are 5 artifacts like that in Standard right now, not counting mana rocks or Treasure tokens. Not sure why that stuck out to you
Note; if I do cyclise the saboteurs, then do restore (((Conch Shell))) and swap (((Conch Player))) to be a sab.
Was an artifact
Decided to do a little hole-filling. Mashup is a way to do that, right?
Rolled me a Flux. And, whaddya know; the set is missing card-draw. There's a couple of cantrip-artifacts; and there's a red looter. But no blue. And, um. Yeah - flux is red-looting.
So there's an obiovus fix - a blue-looting version.
The most direct one is: "Each player draws 7 cards, then discards 7 cards. Draw a card." Which is... kinda 'wow' powerwise? And I was more looking for a common or uncommon than a mythic. It's a nice mythic though. Set that aside (((Fluxx)))
I think it'd be better to fit with the saboteur this set does a bit of? Except the tribes for that are in
not
. Drat.
The next most obvious thing to do is make Conch Horn be a blue creature, rather than an artifact. Vodalian swimming band? (Like a magical mermaid verison of a marching band)?
That's.. actually, that's not a terrible idea. I'm gonna do that.
Double vote on the 1/1 Thrulls. Or two 0/1 Thrulls. Maybe two Thrulls would be better.
I'm not sure what other changes might be done, but I'd advocate for keeping the costs somehow. I'm tempted argue that a 'Breeding Pit' should be a black artifact with an activation of '
,
:'. Or a Fortification?
...maybe it's best to ignore me.
I think this could reasonably updated to create 1/1 Thrull tokens a la Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder and Sarpadian Empires, Vol. VII without it being considered over powered.
: put a 1/1 black Thrull creature token onto the battlefield, activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery and only once each turn." though this would increase it's utility by a fair degree.

. If you do, create a ...... at the start of the next end step. If you don't, sacrifice ~.

and put a ....... If you don't, sacrifice ~. this would also change how the card works significantly though. (my pref is just update to make 1/1's)
Alternately you could have it read: "
Or: At the beginning of your upkeep you may pay
Or: At the start of your end step you may pay
