I could cast it on turn 3; but I'm not sure I ever did.
Skyreach Manta was awful? Huh, I remember it being a Shinen of Flight's Wings or Air Elemental most times I cast it, which was plenty good enough on turn 5 or 6. Vitenka's cast it as a 5/5 on turn 4 before.
Funny that. I was having a hard time doing the math myself. I kept rolling this idea in my head "If I had
up, and a 3/3 creature already on the board, would I rather play this, or Loxodon Warhammer?" Strangely, I think the warhammer is better there. It's like saying "Deal 6 damage to an opponent and gain 6 life" instead of getting a 3/5 creature with a free equip. I could be very wrong.
You know, it's simple enough for Mythic. Let's just make it Mythic.
Noted. We'll leave these boys alone.
I think this is better as a quirky oneoff card than as a cycle.
6/5 trample lifelink for 6 that leaves behind a powerful equipment... hmm. I guess judging by Wurmcoil Engine and Batterskull it'd be fine, but only if you made this mythic.
Living warhammer. Evil.
Hmm... Originally, I planned on this having flavor text along the lines of:
"I admit it. I invited him mostly because he has a good weapon."
-Ibok, Neurok Engineer
But it turns out that putting Legendary token creatures onto the battlefield can take up a lot of words. Oh, well. Maybe I can sneak that response on another card.
Bolivar's Warhammer amuses me, but I can't tell if I like the idea or the card. I guess I could let this stick around and see if people like it or say something like "Dude, it's just an Siege Mastodon with a Loxodon Warhammer. Couldn't you have come up with something more creative?"
I wanted to get a clan of pain in the toochus Humans on Glorica. It's no fun telling a story about a bunch of people struggling to survive, if someone isn't making irrational threats. So, here's Vergen and his two nasty kids. As a bonus, this helps get every refugee on a card in the first set.
My big regret with this card is that, to keep complexity and wordiness down, I had to stick to very basic abilities. I might just make a cycle out of this, though. I don't know why that makes me feel better about the simple stats, but it does.
Yeah, a lot of the XCC creatures are bound to look out of place out of context. I would also like to point out, Shiny Umbreon, that if I costed the card
, then Red would gain a 1/1 flyer with an ability for
... never mind the ability to scale upwards, or the bonus gem counter abilities. That can't be right.
You got to keep in mind that part of the reason why Skyreach Manta was a 2.5 star card is that you always had to pay 5 to get it.
Gem counters have color, which interacts with the rest of the set's mechanics. For example, green gem counters have a different effect than red gem counters do on some spells.
I think it should cost
. Skyreach Manta is already awful. More importantly, why gem counters if they only give +1/+1? They should be +1/+1 counters.
