How the heck do I get this card to not just be strictly worse than Akki Drillmaster, but yet not have the Goblin Back Line take initiative on anything. They don't want 3/2 stats, they shun first strike, any higher casting cost and they aren't relevent, toughness higher than power isn't very red, and adding another abilty complicates this card. Sometimes I wish Last Strike was a keyword...
The set is Wisdom vs. Hellbent. There are a cycle of double cantrips in uncommon, which look more natural in the other colors (for example, Black got target player discards two cards. Draw two cards). In the set, White is the color that loves Wisdom the most, so I try to be nicest to White when shoving extra cards in the hand. This attempt may have been a little too heavy handed, though.
You're right about one thing... people are going to look at this card and say "that draws two cards. Weird that it gives a creature first strike too", which probably means I'm doing it wrong. I should be aiming for an effect that's at least equivalent to drawing to cards, and may not happen in a normal game. Hmm.. maybe Excommunicate?
Yeah... I'm definately not showing this card off in the Great Designer Search 3. But the ability is simple enough to understand, and I often mess with things Wizards wouldn't normally allow. Actually, I'd probably say my drafting group appreciate these cards more.
Agreed. Normally, I design cards and deal with names and flavor much later... but with Multiverse, I get no feedback unless my cards have names. So it is.
The thought behind the name was that you are killing the next creature before it gets to attack... but without flavor text, this doesn't come across... and it might not with flavor text, either.
I've been stumped for a name for this. I wanted something that represents "Total War" or "There are no such things as innocent civilians" but just can't get the right expression. Any suggestions?
Whoa, virgin design territory! This definitely doesn't work within the current ruleset. But, I like where you're going with this, and I don't think it could be accomplished in any "legal" way. So, experiment with various ways of accomplishing this in the most grokkable way.
So, this still has to be used while the opponent is attacking, right? The name doesn't seem to fit the ability, since you're waiting until they've attacked for you to go on the defensive. A preemptive measure would be killing a creature before they even attack.
Cool. I always thought that the spellshapers had a lot of unexplored design space. Well done.
First strike shouldn't be capitalized. Also, this feels backwards. The card draw is the more important part of this card, which puts it squarely into blue territory. Double-cantripping isn't really a thing (unless you're making it a thing), so this is really just a draw spell with an added combat ability.
Good card. This works well with green's ability to get additional lands into hand.
