A second attempt. I get Rod of Ruin.

So, direct damage, on an artifact, is a problem? Presumably there's Unwinding Clock or something teaming up with it; or maybe something that gets horrendous if there's a lot of pinging.

And presumably, we don't much care about red decks (which ping like crazy all the time) - the problem is we've splashed this into some other colour by having an artifact do it. I presume we're in some kinda artifact problem-land; aka. mirrodin.

So. Something that diverts the pinging, and punishes you for pinging it. There have been creatures that gain +1/+1 when damaged; I think that's a good way to go.

So this is quite a decent phy-type creature - medium-stompy at first; but reasonable cost because if it gets blocked a couple of times it becomes a major threat. Development then added on the redirect rider; which lets it swallow up those rod-of-ruin pings. (Assuming the combo-causing problems wasn't Cowardice or something; there's better ways to power that than the rod.) It's a bit blunt, and I'm afeared that the cost of the redirect is too high; but then I don't want to stop red's fireballs cold. I think that there should be a better way to do this bit.

Ah sod it, it'll do. Frankly; I'm loving the image of fangren after phy corruption producing a nasty cat-beast that people would rather let quietly slit your throat than fight back against and let it become the village devouring monster it wants to be.

So - Rod of Ruin? Ruined. The Prodigal Pyromancer is unfortunate collateral damage though.

I could be MORE blunt and make it Tel-Jilad instead, and give it prot-artifacts. That just makes it EVEN better against the rod, without weakening it against red.

I kinda want "Weakness to red". Ah heck, make it "colourless source" damage instead of "non-combat" damage. Help wreck the-blob too.

Coulda messed with targetting; there was the {pu} skittering thing that did that though. Huh; maybe that WAS an answer to rod of ruin, and it worked so well no-one realised it was needed?

Spellskite? Yeah, that was pretty popular in tournaments for that kind of reason.

I was all like "This Rod of Ruin deck is going to ruin the current Standard environment." Then they had to go and print Spellskite. WTH! I wasted $4.50 on that deck!
