Smog Elemental
Yes, this is now Night of Souls' Betrayal but at least it's not also Pestilence. (It's also a heck of a lot better than Torture, but probably nobody cares.)
Still Night of Souls' Betrayal really shouldn't be common. The prospect of someone having 4 of these is crazy.
It might sortof just about be okay if there are literally no common creatures with toughness higher than 1. But, um, that doesn't make for a healthy format either.
Ok; phew; now it just kills the one creature its on; much more reasonable.
It's still a global board-nuke-forever against token decks, which is pretty harsh for its cost. But it's brought in an interesting "Can I keep the creature it is on alive to do so" dilemma.
Which... stops being interesting as soon as you realise that you can slap it on your won hexproof creature. And nicely combo's with a few creatures that power off of -1 counters.
Still slightly undercost I think; but a lot better than it was.
But an environment where "Everything has -1/-1" is common? I can see matches where 3 or 4 hit the table, and everything just completely stalls forever.
And this is in so many ways better. (And, sure, against token decks that already have their Crusade in play, worse).
It's repeatable, selective, creature removal. NWO will have kittens. It's massively environment warping, to put it mildly. Creatures are nearly worthless; regeneration/invulnerability are completely worthless. Hexproof and enchantment removal are vital...
Ok; I kinda want to try that environment now. (I wonder what Red would get to make up for having no creatures to kill?) But future sets would curse you for all time! (And it's still not common.)
Pyrohemia is 10 years old and from Planar Chaos. Not a good precedent for either reason.
Well, I think Pyrohemia proves that Pestilence can be fine at uncommon. But it certainly isn't common material, that's for sure.
Super OP Night of Souls' Betrayal + Pestilence (which is also supposed to be rare, considering it's first-pickable in most formats).
Yowsers. "I win" isn't usually printed at CMC3!
