Wonder if this is currently too similar an effect to Bone-Crown Serpent.

Don't think so. Creature kill vs looking for cards is pretty distinct. I actually like this card a lot -- on of the things I've been thinking about is that seek is almost too open ended, and it would be good if each color tended to use it in well defined, distinct ways. Between this and the 3/2 dies seek 3, I think I like death->seek=cmc as black's implementation.
