Valid point, but I don't think its that big of an issue. It's a 20 turn clock, it dies to everything excluding combat, and just how toxic is Phantom Warrior anyway? People better get on my level and start running Great Wall. :p
Also, it bother's me that every other color gets a 1/1 with landwalk against their own color except white. Plague Beetle, Goblin Mountaineer, Grayscaled Gharial, Willow Dryad.
I'm not designing this with customers in mind. I'm making the set of cards that I would like to see. And despite saying 'core set' I mean an ultimate collection of cards, not something tailored for beginners to the game. I want to see WotC put out a set of cards that has no reminder text and tons of mechanics from years past. Think Time Spiral block meets Modern/Vintage Masters but general enough in setting that the players don't need a whole block's worth of flavor text and a lite novel to make sense of it.
But if it didn't have this weird ability, my Castle and Fortifyes are less effective! D:
Heh, I didn't know it was back in Vintage Masters - I don't follow the online-only sets so much. The duel deck and Commander reprints don't actually say anything either - in non-booster products like that, cards are reprinted with "rarity" equal to their last printed rarity. So Apocalypse and Vintage Masters are the only relevant sets (and Apocalypse the only physical set).
Kinda disagree - the templating of it is horrific; but the idea is fairly simple. "When this gets into a fight with a creature, instead of doing normal power damage, it turns into a thing on the thing your fighting"
I'd suggest, then, spelling it out that way:
If ~ would deal combat damage to a creature, instead it deals 10 damage to it at the start of your next turn
(I think I'd also just say 'destroys it' if this is a beginner set; I know I know, red does damage instead, but fiddly. And this is really just a weakened, activated, version of deathtouch... which makes me wonder why the heck it's so expensive? I'm pretty sure a vanilla 6/2 costs less than this, for red - and is almost always a heck of a lot better)
Oh, wait, hang on - there's a trick that you can do with the way you currently have it. Drop this onto one of your creatures, it blows up and becomes the creature version, ready to be stuck onto an opponents creature. And you can do that cheapish.
... frankly, I'd just ditch that complexity completely. YAGNI.
Aww. I thought this would be Caustic Tar, the land aura, a card I always liked from Odyssey and was glad to see reprinted at last in M15.
You're right it's an evasion ability, but it's a non-interactive one. Either you're playing white, in which case this guy is straight-up unblockable, or you're not, in which case this does nothing. It's not like flying or intimidate where some subset of your creatures can maybe block it: it's all or nothing, on a metagame level, with no interest inside the actual game, just a groan on one side or the other when one side lucks into having an unblockable guy or gets unlucky and has a vanilla 1/1.
Bestow is a really complicated ability. If the customers of this eternal core set are intended to include any who aren't long-time enfranchised players, I rather doubt they'll include any mechanics on the complexity level of bestow, suspend, madness etc. (I could see them including morph, though only if the set had a good number of morphs across all rarities.)
Link: Sure, but "this thing has fear", in English, means "this thing is afraid". It's even worse than "this thing has flying": flying in English isn't a noun at all, but fear is a noun that applies to the one being scared, not the one doing the scaring.
For a common, there's no way it makes more sense to have this weird ability rather than just be a 7/7.
I interpreted it as 'this creature strikes others with Terror'. Intimidate feels more green/red like 'the alpha male exerts his dominance' kinda thing.
Fear: this creature is afraid. Intimidate: this creature is scary. The word fear never made sense, that's part of the reason Wizards changed it.
