It seems about right for that. It's probably not actually that strong, since it normally take multiple turns to affect the game at all, but some 5-cost things can reverse a board instantly.
"and don't sacrifice it" - I love it :)
It's legendary primarily for flavour reasons - this is the tower alluded to on the flavour text of Speargrinder Recluse and others - but I wanted to also give it a bit of splash mechanically, so that the legendary supertype didn't feel wasted. I didn't think this was quite deserving of a mythic slot, although I could be persuaded otherwise.
Indeed it doesn't. Unless it also has trample, if this kills everything with the first strike then it doesn't explode in the normal damage step.
I did a Pointing pass on the set, now the skeleton is virtually complete. Obviously these are just one person's views of how good each card would be in limited.
While acknowledging that you can't perform arithmetic on pointing values directly, I thought the average for each colour would be interesting. That came out at:
|
White|
Blue |
Black|
Red|
Green|
Artifacts|
---|---------|-------|------|------|------|-----|
Common | 1.89 | 1.86 | 2.14 | 1.86 | 1.93 | 1.61
C+U | 1.80 | 1.84 | 2.06 | 1.84 | 1.94 | 1.75
All | 2.03 | 2.00 | 2.28 | 1.93 | 2.06 | 1.86
So I seriously need to take down black's power level. I knew Deathtrap was good, but I hadn't realised how crazily solid and deep the colour was, especially at common.
Otherwise the colours seem pretty balanced; close enough to try drafting, anyway.
I was surprised to see how low the artifacts are compared to the colours; there are certainly plenty of playable artifacts, but I guess there are quite a few not-so-great ones as well, particularly most of the connectors. I'm not entirely happy with the situation of connectors, but otherwise I think the artifacts in the set are fine.
If it kills all creatures attacking/blocking in the first-strike damage step, does it then not deal damage in the regular combat damage step? (Which is fine, I think that's entertaining and dangerous enough.)
"
, Remove five charge counters from Tower of Refuge and don't sacrifice it: Choose one – " ... :)
Wow. Yeah, probably fair, but repeatable "5 cards/5damage" makes me grin :)
Note, by the way, that you don't sacrifice it. It can keep doing its thing multiple times.
fix typo
Ignoring the fun minigame for a moment, this is now an interesting comparison with No-Dachi. It was accidental that the costs match so precisely, but it's probably okay given this is rare and that was uncommon.
Bizarrely, this is actually probably too similar to RB05 Hideous Forging.
Mmm, I don't like having a mythic be a 3/4 for 5. This isn't like MR02 Archas the Unbalanced where it has extra virtual power. Reconsider this thing's P/T and mana cost.
Might want to move to uncommon, but it'd be a pity for Hierarchy to lose the common support.
I think I will take this down to 2 mana. It's too similar to UU02 Merfolk Watchmaker: a three-mana uncommon creature with an artifacty tap ability.
Note to self: CU05 Fluked Corsair and UU03 Flock of Albatross are both 3/3 flyers for 5. Perhaps one should change. Blue doesn't have a 4-mana flyer so far.
I like this. It lets me make an alpha strike, safe in the knowledge that neither my creatures nor I will die. For one turn.
huh, Legendary was in the type box not the supertype. Thought I prevented that from happening.
One possible wording:
> Whenever a nontoken creature with flying you control dies, put a charge counter on Skyscrap Hangar.
,
, Remove a charge counter from Skyscrap Hangar: Put a 1/1 Thopter artifact creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
Another possible wording:
> Whenever a nontoken creature with flying you control dies, you may pay
. If you do, put a 1/1 Thopter artifact creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
Option 2 is shorter and simpler, but can happen multiple times a turn. It's a bit more of an engine, so I'm somewhat cautious. What do people think?
Very simple effect; probably very powerful. Compare Pendelhaven. Likely to be found in the set's tournament aggro decks (I'm always amused to remember mono-red Goblin decks that played a singleton Pendelhaven). Somewhat comparable to Bone Saw: you have to pay the mana every turn rather than once, in exchange for it not taking up a spell slot in your deck.
I think it's good, but I don't think it's actually overpowered. "Sees tournament play" doesn't automatically mean "should be nerfed".
give it a name and creature type
Taking a leaf out of the book of Sword of the Paruns or Thunderstaff.
The name "Sunseeker" is unfortunate, because it evokes Glissa Sunseeker. But if you put that reference aside, it works well, somewhat Icarus-like.
