Don't mind me. Just setting aside some 'timeshifted' slots I plan to use. Murat's name appears on a number of cards, but is one of the few characters of Homelands to not get his own card. That should probably be corrected.

Any idea what creature type he is?

Well, if I'm to go by the Death Speakers, he's probably a Human Cleric. Though, to be honest, I haven't given it much thought yet. Truth is, he could be just about anything. I went looking for him in the mtgsalvation wiki, but got a return of nothing. I assume that means he doesn't appear in any books, either. He really could be any race... though, he's almost certainly a Cleric.

Since I'm trying to use MTG artwork where available, and since Death Speakers was reprinted in Fifth Edition with new art, he could, in theory, be the central figure in this picture.

Death Speakers

But, admittedly, that's not a poor picture to base a Legendary Creature off of. It's certainly no where near as good as Halina, Dwarven Traders, which just takes the alt. art for Dwarven Traders. Halina's even shown with her pony here:

Dwarven Trader

Looks like nobody's made any custom artwork for Murat, or the Deathspeakers either (Note to self: If I ever front a punk/metal fusion band, "Murat and the Death Speakers" will do nicely.

Looks like Murat is roughly a blank slate. I might look for appropriate artwork and work backwards from that.

Hmm. Not sure about this version. Mostly, I just wanted Murat to be a real pain in the derriere. Ignorable at first. But the more he rouses the people, the more problematic he gets. By that point, though, it may be even more dangerous to kill him.

I may have overshot in the amount of life he gets, though. Really wish he could grant 1.5 life for each counter. 1 life seems too slow.

Also, this version does nothing to address his job. An alternate version I was thinking of included an ability that looked like this:

Creatures can not leave the graveyard.
Whenever a creature dies, put a +1/+1 counter on all Clerics you control.

Or something along those abilities. I don't know. I like the 'no leave graveyard clause'. He shouldn't be happy about creatures dying, though. Something more subtle.

Murat originally had "At the beginning of your upkeep, put a speech counter on Murat, then gain 2 life for each speech counter on Murat. When Murat dies, put two 1/1 white Human Cleric token into play for each speech counter on Murat." The idea being he was a pain that eventually must be dealt with, but it would always be worse to kill him.

But that had little to do with Death Speakers. Really, nothing I do can be a combo with Death Speakers unless I made him a black Pestilence like card, but I'm not going to do that.

I figured, however, that I could approach Murat from another angle... make him a different type of pain in the ass. One that always pops up early and prevents you from doing what you want when you want to do it, all while applying beat down.

So he ended up with these three abilities. Pro legends makes sense in set, but I couldn't guarantee it would work out of set. Not moving things out of graveyards is generally good, but too specific to be interesting on its own. And the extra {1} can be used in Cleric tribal, or can just present an annoying problem for the person who can't Doom Blade Murat on round 2.

On the art: Man, I had a hard time finding something appropriate. I wanted a Leper-Evangelist vibe, but I couldn't quite get that. When I stumbled upon the word 'zealot', this popped up... which is when I realized that Murat doesn't need to be a 'he'. Nothing in the flavor alludes to Murat's gender. And the robed figures in the background look like Death Speakers. Bonus.

I'm not fond of the sword. But since Murat isn't really wielding it, it could just be ceremonial.

On the flavor: Stolen from Aysen Highway. Seemed appropriate here, so I moved it here. I suppose I will have to choose which card I want it on, and make flavor for the other.

All looks fine to me. I could see this having "protection from black" instead of "protection from legendary", but it's fine as it is.
