History:

2014-03-20 07:40:16: amuseum created and commented on the card Plane: the card type

Suppose we were to create a new card type: Plane. Naturally, this is not a novel idea. The original idea goes back to the Legends expansion with the Enchant World (now World Enchantment) cards. Much later WotC released Planechase and sequel, introducing the Plane and Phenomenon card types, respectively. And of course, other similar attempts by fans and armchair designers to recreate their own visions thereof. One may even compare similar attempts, such as Terrains.

Banking on the impetus that we would be successful in creating a new card type after so many tries, how would we design it? What are the criteria and desired outcome for this card type? Would you agree with these ideas?:

  • The card type is called Plane. It is a type, not supertype or subtype.
  • All Plane cards have a subtype. Different Plane cards may have the same subtype. There is no Plane rule like Legendary or Planeswalker.
  • It has a normal Magic card back and goes into your normal Magic deck (i.e. part of your 60/15 mainboard/sideboard). Follows the maximum four in a deck rule.
  • How do they come into play? How do they leave play? How do they interact with other card types or other game mechanics (e.g. can it be damaged? does it get loyalty counters? do they have colors?)
  • How do we simulate Planeswalking with them? Can we borrow Planechase-specific symbols and mechanics?
  • How do they fit into the set? What rarities? Since a block usually takes place one a single Plane, would all Plane cards in the set have the same subtype? (which suggests that a Plane rule is undesirable.)
  • Many Plane cards should have close mechanic ties with Planeswalkers.

RULES BAGGAGE ALERT

  • {1} === 1 loyalty counter
  • Plane cards can be attacked by creatures following these rules:
    • Players pay {2} (or remove any loyalty counters from PWs they control to reduce this cost by {1}) for each creature attacking that Plane card if attacking player does not control a Plane card with the same subtype.
  • Planes come with structure counters. These do not replenish each turn.
  • Players may add a structure counter by removing a loyalty counter from a Planeswalker he controls, and vice versa. (As a sorcery? Only once for each Planeswalker card each turn? Only if that Plane shares a subtype with a Plane that the player controls?...)

and so on...
