It's just a memory counter. But the fact is that it may last for multiple turns. Maybe the creature controller skips a turn, or end one before end step with Sundial or similar effects, so I though it was warranted
What does a venom counter do? Or is it just a memory aid? You probably don't need that for an effect that only lasts a single round

When ~ enters choose a number between 0 and 5 twice. These numbers may not add up to more than 5. Designate the first number to power and the second to toughness.
I don't think this is formal MTG language, but it's less mathy
Edit: these numbers must add up to exactly five (if you don't want a 0/0) being an option.
In Magic: the Gathering, when you are required to choose numbers, the rule is already that you must choose nonnegative integer numbers
