"Whenever" indicates a triggered ability, whereas "instead" is used with replacement effects. This has to be a replacement effect, so you need to use "if... Instead."

Yea I was thinking the wording might need clearing.

Maybe just "Whenever a landcycling ability would put a land card into your hand, put that card into the battlefield tapped instead."?

This needs to be worded as a replacement effect. I think "If a search made as part of a landcycling ability would put a land card into your hand, put that card into the battlefield tapped instead" is close but might not be right.
