you could theme it as a shield of light/energy that absorbs damage & redirects it outward.
"cost: prevent the next 1 damagefrom a source, it is dealt to that source/source's controller instead"
even just going with absorption field and preventing.
Hmm, perhaps it could gain old-style triggered lifelink. That stacks. On its own that's a pretty dull equipment, but it could give flying as well. Flavoured as infusing the creature / its armour with glowing electrical energy.
Get out those Ornithopters and token-makers...
The flavour of converting [Electrical] or
into [Radiation] could work quite nicely as a spotlight, or laser. This needs to be an Equipment to fit the "five different types of artifacts" in the new tighter Birthing Chamber cycle. The problem is, what can I do to equipped creature? I'd like it to be something you might like to do more than once, so "gains flying/first strike/etc" isn't very good. Heat-Compression Centrifuge has taken "untap" because there are so few things Connectors can do. Rodent-Run Automaton has taken pumping the creature's P/T. I do want it to refer to the equipped creature in some way (so not just "tap target creature", which is otherwise nice flavour for a beam of light).
I'm somewhat short on remaining things this could do... So far my best ideas are a) granting a keyword ability that stacks, although there aren't any everygreen such in white's pie. It could be the set mechanic Collaborate, but that doesn't fit with the laser/spotlight flavour very well; or b) something like "gains flying and gets +0/+2", but that's pretty dull.
Anyone got any better ideas?
I've reworked this cycle to work in a nicer order:
->Rodent-Run Automaton->[Torque] /
->Heat-Compression Centrifuge->[Steam] /
->Chargecoil Station->[Electrical] /
-> Refractive Cagemail->[Radiation] /
->Birthing Chamber->[Chemical].
[Chemical] /
Plays the role of (((Scalding Conduvent land ver))) in the new nicer Birthing Chamber cycle.
In the new tighter version of the Birthing Chamber cycle.
This is an element of the reworked Birthing Chamber cycle: [Chemical]-
-[Torque]-
-[Steam]-
-[Electrical]-
-[Radiation]-
-[Chemical].
Art should make it very obvious that this is a battle drone powered by a few hamster wheels, with small rodents on treadmills connected by clockwork to its sword arms and such.
You could self-mill, but that's very little cost and still has a 4th-wall problem. I think probably Discard is the best you'll get.
Hm. I know what Chris means, although "discard" does have an appropriate waterfall feel for torque. Even more flavourful would be "tap an untapped permanent you control and untap a tapped permanent you control" or perhaps "put a card from zone A into zone B and a card from zone B into zone C" but I can't imagine how that would work mechanically.
Heh. It is somewhat. I'd love another cost, but I don't think "Sacrifice a planeswalker" is very sensible... :) I was thinking of the Odyssey atogs, which had "sac an artifact", "sac an enchantment", "sac a land", "discard a card" and "exile 2 cards from graveyard" as their costs - no "sac a creature". But the
flavour of throwing creatures into your engine to get chemical power is rather irresistible.
Because it's generally harder to remove artifacts than creatures, which will mean the pinging is harder to stop in cases where you need to. But I'll obviously be putting a decent dollop of artifact removal in common, so it may not be an issue.
