dropped Hexproof. I’ve already got several other hexproof cards, and the more I look at this one, it just doesn’t need it. The trample, boost, and Thopter pooping all tie together pretty logically, so that ought to be enough.
Newbridge was the name we'd given Debronia's capitol. I'd like to include it as a rare land, though not necessarily using the "districts" model you and I had discussed. I think that concept is probably too much for the set now.
I'm really excited though about being able to use a card like this to nail a cultural aspect of the setting. This is a place with professional sports teams and kids that want to grow up to play for those teams. No idea what that sport is, but I'm not sure it really matters. You may not understand the rules or strategies of Quidditch, but when you see a bunch of kids running around together in the street with similar colored shirts and a ball, you get the idea.
Jumping off from "Newbridge", I think it's probably a good idea to have a name for this plane, and probably one for the continent across the ocean – the one the Reigsman Empire tried taking over during the war. They're not necessarily names that will crop up a ton in this set, but I could see them being really useful when we get to talking about the war itself in Door 47.
I've nudged his toughness up by one.
That said, this guy definitely has problems. I'm considering just dropping the evidence trigger all together. I've put evidence on Grounding Theory, so I've got a spare uncommon example here green.
In the world I'm seeing here, most of the "key player" races are intelligent. Okay, goblins aren't the brightest, but even they find ways to function here and there. So yeah, Soradyne does indeed employ giants—Soradyne Geologist for example. It's a large, multi-faceted corporation in a technomantically advanced culture. Even those raised and living in rural settings can bring valuable skills to the science business (just ask Monsanto).
I went with the evidence trigger here because blue needed one in an uncommon slot. I don't think every color needs one there, but the wizard theme has the most tools to filter cards and draws, so I think it's fairly important to keep it present at all levels short of mythic.
Houlding makes a good point. I always seem to forget that when you have a lot of spare creatures, they should probably be attacking.
I can also see where JM is coming from, but this concerns me less. If someone wants to slow-roll a game for a 1-0 win, they're going to find a way with or without this.
Hmm... I wouldn't be as concerned about power level as much as I would be concerned about stalling the game as a player scry 1s, thinks, gets rid of and repeats with 5 saprolings on the table. That said, at least this is all happening at sorcery speed.
Yeah, just visualize the scenario where someone is going to "go off" and use this a bunch. Have you visualized it yet? Because all you should see is one player who is under no pressure and decided to troll their opponent by tapping all their creatures in order to look at the same card again and again.
Whereas, if someone needs to scry to find an out, tapping all your defenders/attackers main phase is only viable if you know you have a wrath-effect.
Yeah, that’s reasonable. The aura doesn’t actually net anything until after the host creature does something.
You really think this is safe for a
equip cost? I realize that scry 1 isn’t nearly as strong as scry 2, but it still lets you dig through a deck.
Okay, when both of you are bending the same way at the same time, there’s probably a good reason. You win. Three-drop, zero-equip?
Morph minimized in this set (though I still plan on it being in the second set), so the Break Open option is once again tabled. The new third ability is pretty standard red fare, and makes a lot of sense in this environment.
Going with three “target creature...” abilities seemed pretty narrow to me though. I’ve brought back a “damage to all players” type of ability in the first slot. While a previous similar ability fell flat, I’d like to include something like this as a nod to multiplayer formats.
Balancing charms sucks.
If there were ever an equipment that could have an equip cost of
, this would be it. Lightning Greaves? Bad Idea. Mediocre card filter gadget? A-ok!
I think that jm’s suggestion would be fine in plenty of sets — in which case it would replace what I’ve got here — but in this setting I believe that it’s better to have some conditional evasion.
I’m inclined to just go with the current wording and a 3/2 body without changing the cost. For the most part, I suspect that the ability will actually be barely relevant in most games, so a 3/2 body is fair.
I’m not saying I think he’s a bad card or low pick, just that he’ll be more useful for his base stats than his ability. And I’m fine with that.
I see your point. I don’t think the two are entirely analogous though, as this can be activated multiple times in a turn, whereas the ball was a one-shot each turn. I’ll adjust this and we’ll see how it flies.
Two reasons not to let it put the land in play, tapped or otherwise:
1) Discard = free land drop. Hold a no-land hand with this, draw, discard, search and play land, end turn.
2) Green evidence trigger wants to play with this.
Honestly, I’ve felt for a very long time that the “enchantment wombat effect” has been in the wrong place. Green is the color of stripping things back to their true nature, not of alterations and artificial growth. While I don’t have a problem with green auras, I can’t think of a single reason why the color of Naturalize, Tranquility, and Creeping Mold should have creatures that want to be enchanted all that much more.
Blue was the Thran color in Urza Block, and it was the Thran that, as a race, wanted to be all ’roided out on auras. Blue’s supposed to be the color of alteration, so this all makes a lot more sense to me.
Circling back around to Soradyne Laboratories, Blue and white are the colors that have the closest ties to the Soradyne Corporation’s Consumer Products and Marketing divisions. White gets a bunch of Equipment support, blue gets a bunch of Aura support. Put the two together and you get this. Yes, it’s asking to get two-fer’ed. It’s also strong enough in limited to merit grabbing, and encourages more of the same without outright relying on it.
In a way though, I like that views like Mandroid’s will happen around this. Without the question of “is it good or not?”, limited picks and cards in general get boring really fast.
