This card is better than a basic Swamp. This should be avoided by common design practice.

Agreed; though this is a very small addition, and "Discarding cards is your best option" is a somewhat disliked one.

It's possible that this not being a basic land (and thus being harder to search for) is a sufficient downside for the upside of "Pay mana - something bad happens to you, why would you even do this?" outside of the set :)

Also a pasture might not want to produce black mana.
